While married to TV personality Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey really wanted to get pregnant. The pair tried again and again to have a baby but continued to struggle. But when Carey finally got pregnant, she wanted to wait to make sure it was going to stick, but during an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’s show in 2008, the talk show host bullied Mariah into revealing her pregnancy right before she went on to miscarry.

The clip below shows how Ellen “peer pressured” Mariah to talk about her personal business. Ellen spoke about the rumors that Carey was pregnant and asked her to tell the world while on The Ellen Show. Ellen forced Mariah to reveal the truth by trying to force her to drink alcohol while on air.

Although Carey was expecting at the time, she was not prepared to make the announcement publicly. Nevertheless, Ellen used her power to bully Carey into revealing details about her pregnancy. By forcibly offering the singer alcohol, Ellen was able to learn that Carey was not going to drink it, which helped Ellen discover Mariah and Nick Cannon’s secret love child.

Ellen tried to have Mariah prove that she was not pregnant by toasting champagne in front of her live studio audience. Because Mariah went on to have a miscarriage shortly after Ellen’s publicity stunt, she has had “a hard time grappling with” the bullying in the decade since.

“I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say,” Mariah told Vulture. “And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath.”

During the short segment (featured below), Ellen continues to grill Mariah about her sex life with Nick Cannon, challenging her on the rumors that he had gotten her pregnant.

“I don’t discuss that,” Mariah told Ellen, trying to laugh off her discomfort.

Ellen switched tactics. She grabbed a bottle of champagne and then bullied Mariah to take a drink to “prove” she wasn’t pregnant.

Mariah desperately tried to get Ellen to stop bullying her. She talked about how champagne would make her fat. When that didn’t convince Ellen, Mariah said she did not want to drink on television.

When Mariah realized that Ellen was going to force her to drink, Mariah said, “I can’t believe you did this to me, Ellen.

She then addressed the audience, “This is peer pressure. Do you see what Ellen is doing? This is peer pressure.”

Ellen handed her a glass of booze and said, “Let’s toast to you not being pregnant.”

When Mariah took a sip that appeared to be fake, Ellen screamed: “You are pregnant!”

A decade later, Mariah confirmed that Ellen bullied her in front of a national audience.

“I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage,” she said. “I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.”

Shortly after, Mariah Carey was bullied into drinking booze by Ellen DeGeneres, she suffered a miscarriage and lost her baby.

A few years later, Carey and Cannon went on to have twin girls.
