Although she bills herself as a progressive Democrat, representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is willing to shell out a decent amount of money when it comes to maintaining her looks. As the youngest ever woman elected to Congress, Ocasio-Cortez has a lot to prove – and looking good helps make a strong statement. However, it has since come to light that the Democratic Congresswoman from The Bronx in New York City shelled out a whopping $250 to a recent hair salon trip.
During her trip to the salon, Ocasio-Cortez spent $180 for lowlights and an additional $80 on a haircut at the Last Tangle Salon, which is located in downtown Washington, D.C. Everyone knows that a hair salon appointment is not cheap, but what Ocasio-Cortez is getting done on her hair is equivalent to what someone would expect a movie start to pay.
The Washington Times reported on Ocasio-Cortez’s beauty routine and also found out that she was a generous tipper. She gave a 20 percent tip for a total of $52. With the services and tips included in the final bill, Ocasio-Cortez spent $312 for the hair salon service.
Critics of Ocasio-Cortez believe that luxury purchases like this prove that she is a hypocrite when it comes to her socialist politics. That’s why the President of Americans for Limited Government, Richard Manning, went through a lengthy process to use this recent salon visit to make the native of The Bronx and representative from a busy district in New York City to make her look bad.
Manning told the Washington Times, “There is nothing wrong with spending money to make yourself look better, especially as a personality who depends upon visual mediums for her make power.” He added, “But it is a bad look to spend hundreds of dollars to get your hair done to make a video decrying income inequality.”
Ocasio-Cortez did not respond to a comment from the conservative Washington Times when they asked her for a comment. Her office did not respond to repeated calls from the outlet, asking for more details about her beauty routine.
However, Ocasio-Cortez did turn to Twitter to fire out a critique of Vice President Mike Pence and his leadership of the Coronavirus Task Force.
She wrote, “Won’t you look at that: Mike Pence used *taxpayer funds* – not personal ones – to spend several thousand haircuts’ worths of public money on a visit to Trump golf courses.”
She added, “I wonder if Republicans care about corruption as much as they care about a woman’s cut & color.”
Because Ocasio-Cortez is being targeted for her visit to the Washington, D.C. beauty salon, some people believe she is the victim of sexism. Men never face scrutiny over where they get their hair cut.
Jessica Valenti wrote, “1) this would obvs never be a story about a man 2) this is not an expensive haircut/color for a public figure who is frequently on TV 3) if her hair was raggedy, that would be the lead story instead.”
What do you think about her expensive haircut? Should she be criticized for it?
