It is no secret that former President Donald Trump and leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci butted heads throughout the pandemic. However, Dr. Fauci has recently come forward with a statement about one move that Trump made that was “like a punch to the chest” for the doctor. Trump’s shocking move came near the beginning of the pandemic and emboldened those who did not want to follow the recommended measures to social distance and wear face masks while in public to help slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
Although the official stance of the Trump administration was to slow the spread of the virus, Trump contradicted his own words by issuing statements to pro-Trump supporters urging them to remove their masks and “liberate” themselves from the rules put in place to help save lives. During a CNN special, Dr. Fauci confessed that he was shocked beyond belief that Trump would encourage protestors to take off their masks and expose them to the risk of contracting the coronavirus, which could lead to coronavirus disease or COVID-19 as it is known.
“The thing that hit me like a punch to the chest was then all of a sudden he got up and said ‘Liberate Virginia, Liberate Michigan,’” Fauci said on a CNN special on Sunday. “And I said to myself, ‘Oh my goodness. What is going on here?’”
Dr. Fauci found it shocking that Trump was willing to politicize the virus in an attempt to gain votes for his reelection campaign. In the interview, Dr. Fauci was referring to a barrage of tweets from then-president Trump, who wanted to stop people from following CDC guidance that was put in place to curb the spread of the virus responsible for more than half a million dead Americans.
Trump’s shocking and dangerous series of tweets read, “LIBERATE MINNESOTA!” “LIBERATE MICHIGAN!” “LIBERATE VIRGINIA.” These tweets were designed to empower anti-maskers who did not want to cover up to help slow the spread of the virus. There were many conspiracy theories floating around at the time about where the virus originated and how it was spreading. Nevertheless, scientists assured the public that the best way to combat the spread of the virus was by wearing a face mask to prevent the spread of respiratory droplets and by keeping at least six feet from people when out in public.
“It shocked me because it was such a jolt to what we were trying to do,” Dr. Fauci said.
Because of Trump’s support to the anti-mask, anti-vaccine, and anti-lockdown protestors, a group of armed vigilantes broke into the Michigan Captial in late April in an attempt to kidnap and perhaps murder and rape the governor of Michigan, Democrat Gretchen Whitmer. She was a frequent target of then-President Trump because she was listening to Dr. Fauci’s warnings and trying to get Michigan’s citizens to social distance and wear masks while out in public.
Fortunately, the Michigan militia failed to kidnap the female governor and harm her.
